BRAZIL 2002
PICO DA NEBLINA TREK - LOGGED GPS WAYPOINTS
DISCLAIMER: These waypoints were obtained in the field, during the ascent of Pico da Neblina that I undertook in Brazil in Sept. 2002. They are accurate to the best of my knowledge. However, I cannot be held responsible for any injury, loss, or damage to any persons using this information or any legal ramifications (use of GPS receivers is illegal in some countries), irrespective of cause. Persons using this information should be aware that GPS technology is not a substitute for traditional navigation skills. Also, as with any outdoor activity, even the correct use of GPS technology and this information could still lead to injury or death. GPS receivers will not function under heavy tree cover, these waypoints were obtained in clearings or on wide rivers. They cannot be viewed as a substitute for jungle navigation experience or the services of a reliable local guide.
You can download the GPS waypoints below direct to your GPS unit (GPS
/ PC interface cable required), and save yourself a lot of typing. All you need to do is to follow these easy steps:
1.
Visit the GPS Utility website
and download the latest version
of the GPS Utility program -it's FREE, excellent and easy to use!
2. Follow the instructions
in the program's help pages to configure your GPS and COM port (don't worry
- its simple!). The program will work with most Garmin and Magellan GPS models
(plus others). Click on 'Help' then 'Contents' then 'Initialising' and follow
the instructions.
3. Ensure your GPS unit is set up as I have described in 'GPS SETUP'
below - ready for navigation in Brazil.
4. Click on this link to download
the trek waypoints that are listed below: Rowan's
Pico da Neblina Waypoints
5. The file that you just downloaded,
which contains the waypoints, is a simple text file. All you need to do now
is to save the file and copy it into your GPS Utility folder. Just go to 'My Computer',
then look in your hard drive, open the 'Program Files' folder and you will see
the GPS Utility folder there (if you have installed the Utility program as recommended
by the installation instructions, see Step 1).
6. Connect up your GPS unit
(ensure it is switched on and ready to receive the data), open the GPS Utility
Program, select 'File' then 'Open' then 'nebgps'. You should now see the
list of waypoints for the Pico da Neblina trek appear. On the task bar, select
'Upload All', wait a few seconds and there you have it - All of the waypoints
installed on your GPS and you are ready for the trek!
7. In the unlikely
event that you have a problem with the above contact
me and I will try to help.
